Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted May 16, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted May 16, 2017 Keep a look out for your front brakes binding after changing pads. Jeep brake pistons are made of phenolic resin which swell very slightly with age and contact with brake fluid. They are fine as the pads wear but when you push them back to fit new pads, they tend to now bind. Piston rebuild kits are sensible money and I always rebuild the calipers at the same time. So i drove to work today and smelt some very hot metal when i got out. Only 8 miles to work. Drivers side caliper is binding. Repair kit it is then. Graham, you were very right. Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted May 20, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted May 20, 2017 So. New brake calipers fitted today. The old ones were binding to the point where it melted the paint off the pads. They smelt lovely. Could have just rebuilt them, but the two new calipers were only 20 quid more than a repair kit. Plus they are nice and shiney. Also hopefully sorted the whistle from my light bar.
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted May 21, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted May 21, 2017 so, ive been looking at getting some 31's for my xj before whitecliff in june, and lets face it, there are lots to choose from. I would love to go out and buy a full set of stt pros, or BF Goodridge MT's, but alas, I don't have the funds for that after getting the car through its mot and sorting the brakes. so, started looking at the budget end of things, and found these Hifly MT601's on ebay, I'm pretty sure they are a Chinese make of tyre, which sort of sets alarm bells ringing, but, benefit of the doubt and all that... so I looked for hours online to try and find a review on them, and there is nearly nothing to read up on, I found a few saying that after 30k miles, they start to delaminate, but to be fair, they are off road tyres being driven at highway speeds for 90% of the time, and they are really cheap. I don't know how many miles the big brand names get for running MT's on the road? anyway, for £300 for a set of 4 31x10.5r15 mud tyres, delivered, I thought it would be worth a punt. when they turn up, il get them fitted and see how it goes. I might start a separate thread blogging how they do over there lifespan.
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted May 23, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted May 23, 2017 Tyres arrived today. Look good for cheapies. Just need to see how they handle
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted May 23, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted May 23, 2017 Looking good Richard. I am now really missing and regretting selling my XJ :icon_cry: Cheers. I know im a bit bias, but i think xjs are some of the best looking jeeps out there.

Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted May 23, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted May 23, 2017 So. Just on the way home, which is only about 3 miles, there was nearly no change in road noise or driving effort. Which i was quite surprised at. Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted July 8, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted July 8, 2017 wow it seems like forever since I last wrote on here. so, ive done about 2000 miles on the new tyres, and other than a drop in in fuel economy, and I don't really use 5th much any more lol, the tyres are doing well. no road noise are 30+ mph, but a bit bumpy under that. the grip is good on and off road, but the back can be a little twitchy in the rain on road. I'm not really thinking about fitting a matching XRC rear bumper and tyre carrier, so I can fit the same tyre to my spare, as its still got a standard one on. but £1300 for a bumper makes the eyes water a bit
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted August 10, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted August 10, 2017 ok, don't a bit of maintenance over the last few days. new exhaust, because the old one has nearly split in half, and I also noticed that my front tyres were actually rubbing on my swaybar. so I fitted a nice set of 30mm spacers. not very noticeable on stance, but at least they clear the swaybar now. Platinum Member Fourpot Posted August 11, 2017 Platinum Member Share Posted August 11, 2017 Cool! What does the car look like now the track is wider? Have you done front and rear or just front?
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted August 11, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted August 11, 2017 Not that different really. I did front and rear. The oucs above are if the front disk and rear drum.

Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted September 7, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted September 7, 2017 and disaster, on the day I set aside to replace my clutch, I get a suspicious noise coming from the engine, pinging and tapping, great. need to look into it a bit more, but suspected knackered piston. just what I needed right now lol :grrrrrr: :grrrrrr: :grrrrrr: :grrrrrr: :grrrrrr:
Platinum Member Fourpot Posted September 7, 2017 Platinum Member Share Posted September 7, 2017 My first thought when I saw you'd added to your thread was, 'Oh good, more interesting things done to Rich's truck'. I feel for you, my rear axle has now cost me the best part of £700! Nightmare, hope it's not too serious. Or... Just drop a Chevy 350 in it instead...? https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xchevy+engine.TRS0&_nkw=chevy+engine&_sacat=
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted September 7, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted September 7, 2017 As tempting as that is, i need to keep my sencible head on. And try to just fix this one. But if i cant.......... i feel a diesel xj may appear and have all the mods transferred to it, then mine may become a trialer. ( which would be cool, but a massive waste of a very solid xj)
Platinum Member Fourpot Posted September 8, 2017 Platinum Member Share Posted September 8, 2017 Hopefully, the current 2.5 will prove to be fixable. I really liked my 2.5 petrol...
Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted September 8, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted September 8, 2017 Well. Il throw up a load if photos of the strip down and rebuild as i do it. Platinum Member RichBris86 Posted October 9, 2017 Author Platinum Member Share Posted October 9, 2017 Soooo, now I know what the issue is with the engine, and ive got most of it apart anyway, I think im going to refurb the whole thing. new seals, shells, rings, clutch, flywheel if it needs it. the works, starting with the rocker cover. need to clean it up, get all the paint off and respray it an exciting new colour. let the fun begin. pictures show the rocker cover so far, I just need to get it sent to a chemical cleaner to make it spotless, then on with the new paint.
