Platinum Member Vuck Roger Posted August 21, 2015 Platinum Member Share Posted August 21, 2015 After returning form the North of Spain, I am starting to look into other destinations to drag my minivan... I remembered a while ago here, someone mentioned a collection of good off-road/overland guides for France, but I can't seem to find it (and yes, I used the search function). Can you, seasoned overlanders that have venture beyond the Channel, give some recommendations? I do not have a problem if guides (or so) are written in French. Thank you all! Platinum Member Obarno Posted August 22, 2015 Platinum Member Share Posted August 22, 2015 Hi Hugo I've done quite a lot of off roading in France and am a member of a couple of clubs. There are a number of organisations that either offer guided off road trips, road books or road book events. Perhaps one of the better known is GRM - Grands Randonneurs Motorise - who run the Milles Rivieres, but also used to run the Trophee Cevenol which unfortunately no longer exists. I did both events several times and thoroughly enjoyed them. They also run the Alta Rocca in Corsica, again a road book event but with everything included in terms of meals, accomodation, ferry etc. You can find them on http://www.grmfrance.com/ Another one is MCO 4x4 run by Michel Couret. Most months they have an event which again is road book with all accommodation included. The year before last I did the Piste Des Forts in Italy which was excellent. Lovely part of the world. I have since been back to drive some more routes. We stayed in Bardonecchia and went out each day. You can find them at http://www.mco4x4.com/index.html There is also Pistav who do guided trips. I've never done any of their events so can't tell you what they are like! You can find them on http://pistav.free.fr/edito.htm There is a link on that site for road books for quite a few areas of France, but also other European countries too. I have recently bought their road book Val Cenis to Nice which we are doing with a couple of friends in September. This is the link http://guide4x4.free.fr/topic/index.html There is also Vibraction who sell road books mainly for Spain, but also for North Africa. Again I have used a couple of their road books for the Pyrenees and found them good. You can find them on http://vibraction.pagesperso-orange.fr/index.htm In Corsica their is also Corsica Jeepers. I have no experience of them but maybe worth a look. I obviously don't want to step on the clubs toes for the event they will do next year in Corsica. http://www.corsicajeepers.fr/#!randonnes--la-carte/c4zt So hope that gives you something to think about! Platinum Member Obarno Posted August 22, 2015 Platinum Member Share Posted August 22, 2015 One other place to look for off road routes is Wikiloc. They have a huge number of trails, put up by the public, for all round the world, but plenty in France. You have to search by category and then area. Keep looking as the search very much depends on the name of the start place for the route. They can be found at http://www.wikiloc.com/trails/offroading I have done a few routes I found on there which I downloaded on to my Ipad mini. You have to pay a very small amount to download the app.
Platinum Member Vuck Roger Posted August 22, 2015 Author Platinum Member Share Posted August 22, 2015 Thank you, Sir! The name I was looking for was Vibraction; I use Wikilocs frequently, for trail running and MTB, but I will sure have a look on the other suggestions! Much appreciated. Administrators stewart Posted August 22, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 22, 2015 I would recommend using professionals for some of these trips ! As they have the extra knowledge and experience needed ! Some road books are also out of date by a few years, having just been to Corsica for a Recce trip I can say that many of the trails are not what the road books say as things change very quickly !!
