V
Do you have a photo of when they went off? I'm interested in seeing what damage it does to the dashboard on the passenger side. Â My Jeep has been through some harsh territory off-road and never set off an air-bag. I am fairly certain that it has to be an impact or a multiple G-force deceleration. Â It would be good to see photos of each stage of this job. I have taken the dashboard and HVAC out of a WG before but only partially stripped the dashboards on both of my XJs. At some point, when I have confirmed there's no legal problem removing airbags that cannot be replaced with new airbags, I will remove mine. VIP Member digger Posted July 7 VIP Member Share Posted July 7 I back 'v'. I've never heard of an air bag 'just' going off either. No disrespect but it sounds like a bit of a tall story to me! Was it the motor trade said this? Can you or have you seen physical evidence which supports that the air bags are discharged?  I seem to recall that I've had to remove XJ air bags in the past. I think to replace the heater matrix but don't rely on my ancient memory. I think the manual said just to make sure you disconnect the battery so you cannot set them off. After that you just unbolt it. So,presumably one would just bolt in the new one! Do you have a workshop manual? Its an invaluable tool! Have you looked on the net for airbag replacement?
Slayercommathe
Guys.. can we stop please.  I'm not here to debate how or why they went off. Nor am I here to witness who's on who's side. The airbags went off because they were tearing through a field and drove into a big dip. There's a dent in the bottom of the front wing. I know how it happened. I'm not here for that. I'm here to ask for assistance. I thought a club of enthusiasts would be happy to help. Guess I was wrong

V
2 hours ago, Slayercommathe said: Guys.. can we stop please.  Sorry. I was just curious what the passenger side would look like when one went off. I've not seen detonated XJ air-bags before.  My initial questions were because there are a number of things that would cause an air-bag light error that doesn't need air-bags or controller replacement to fix.  It is possible that someone reading your second post might think that driving off-road would set their XJ air-bags off. You have since clarified that it was an impact that did it, so no confusion caused there now.  2 hours ago, Slayercommathe said: I'm here to ask for assistance. I can't, I'm too far away and I'm busy getting my Jeep prepared for an expedition in 10 days time.  Edited July 7 by V

Guess I was wrong @V and @Digger are two of the most helpful people you will find, they both have masses of experience and are incredibly generous with their time. They are both deservedly highly respected here. If, as it seems, you are here looking for somebody to come and do the job for you for a few beers, rather than paying the going rate, I would have thought you might be a little less touchy. Despite your outburst @V is still trying to help, but frankly if you don't want to have a polite conversation I suggest it would be best to either get on and do it yourself or go to a garage and pay to have it done, then you won't have to have any conversations you don't want to engage in. Slayercommathe
Honestly the responses I've got here make me wonder why I asked. I've been a member of many enthusiast groups over the years and there's generally a community of like minded people who are more than happy to help each other out. Sometimes meeting up to sort a car out can be a good social. I've offered and received help quite a few times. The way I have been treated here is disgusting. I think I will take my leave. Sadly this club is not what I expected

Ever heard the saying "if you have nothing nice to say...."  No, not to pick on you, don't play the matyr, I joined the thread to suggest you be a little more polite when asking others for help and especially when reply to two very well respected members of the JOC. I had nice things to say about @digger and @V, because they have demonstrated they are deserving of it countless times. But before I replied I checked your posting history. You were here in 2019, when you posted to moan that Jim had not given you enough notice about an event and that apparently made you "kinda angry". Then you didn't show up again until late 2022 when you came on to say you had a new XJ, then you don't seem to have been around again until now. It rather seems that you see your engagement with JOC as a one way street, it is all about you, no engagement on other people's threads, no encouragement and no offers of help to others. In contrast somebody in the JOC recently gave up their time and the use of their car lift to help another member, but then that other member is regularly here and helpful to others. Sadly this club is not what I expected I think you were being offered genuine help on here I have just read this entire thread and can't see any issues? It's unusual for airbags to just go off when off roading it's still a rare thing to happen without a serious crash (I attend many car cashes as a firefighter )  I don't know anyone who has had this happen so maybe thats why so many questions on the issue? No-one was picking on you or being offensive in my view but happy to discuss further via PM message if you feel the need .

When I read that post, the meaning I took from it was "has someone told you that it had been driven across a field which set off the air-bags" not "are you claiming that the air-bags went off just driving across a field".

I didn't come here to be judged, I asked for help. But honestly thats small change compared to another forum member who thinks its acceptable to trawl my profile and decide if I'm worthy of a nice response or not! That sort of obnoxious behaviour has no place anywhere. Like I said, not the club I thought it was

V
27 minutes ago, Slayercommathe said: Exactly. I didn't come here to be judged, I asked for help. Forgive me if I don't understand the point that you are trying to make. Your request for help was understood, but the reason why you needed help was not. You didn't provide sufficient information for others to determine if you were unnecessarily replacing airbags when a simpler fix may have been possible. Â Instead of saying: On 06/07/2023 at 16:54, Slayercommathe said: No, its because previous owner went blasting through fields and set them both off. You could have said: "No, it's because the previous owner crashed the Jeep in a field and set them both off." This thread would have been completely different if you had. Â The people here that responded with replies were trying to save you the time performing an unnecessary fix when a simpler solution for undetonated XJ air-bags is often worth trying first. Â I am sorry if I upset you by asking questions that you thought were unnecessary. The only judgement about you that I have made is that you could do better at providing accurate information. You have my public apology.
