Kiwi Pete
Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a 4 door JL Rubicon and need a little help. Before I take the plunge my better, and much smarter, half has suggested I check that one would actually fit in my garage. I've figured out the Rubi is 183cm high and with my garage being 186 I've got about 30mm to play with, but that does seem pretty tight. So, I was wondering if there's anyone on here around the Hythe/Folkestone area (CT21) with a standard JL Rubi who might be prepared to pop over and see if it fits in. I would be most happy to pay for your time in cash or beer or a charitable donation. Cheers, Pete Edited April 24 by Kiwi Pete Typo
Spike64
Hi, I'm about 20miles away from Hythe/Folkestone but only have a 2 door Rubicon. Let me know if this would be any use. Regards Ian
Kiwi Pete
That's really kind of you Ian - I'm thinking I'd really need a 4 door as there's a bit of an angle on the driveway. Having said that I've had re-measure and think it should be okay, just need to decide if I actually want to do it. Cheers, Pete

Kiwi Pete
Okay, I made a jig! I've got 20mm clearance, which is as good as a mile Next question, can anyone recommend a rack to carry push bikes? My new jeep has a tow bar but thinking something that attached to the spare wheel might work best...
V
Neat! If your clearance is tight and you have a ramp angle going into the garage you should make a jig that replicates the roofline from the rear windscreen to the front windscreen.
Kiwi Pete
Thankfully you drive up forward into the garage so I'm hoping it'll work, though I don't think I'l be able to reverse the Jeep into there! The distance between the centreline of the rear wheels on the estate to the high bar represents the distance from the centreline of the front wheels on the Rubicon to the top of the windscreen (approx. 1200mm). Collecting on Saturday so will know for sure by then PS, anyone want to buy a 2008 A4 Avant?! Edited May 2 by Kiwi Pete
BLUE STAR
You could always 'air down' the tyres for extra clearance

It's not ideal as the tyres don't like being like that for a long time.
Kiwi Pete
Well, it fits. Has about 5mm clearance. Bloody love it!
V
Wow that is close. Be careful driving into the garage in the summer or with hot tyres after a motorway journey. The tyre pressure will increase with heat and may consume your clearance gap if they expand taller below the axle centreline.
Kiwi Pete
Good call V, thanks. I'm thinking "new tyre day" may also be challenging!

New tyres may be expensive if it also means a pair of side hinges garage doors!
