It is always worth getting quotes from local fabricators and machinists. If you are not under time pressure, and you know what it costs elsewhere, you can haggle for a better deal if they can do your job during slack time between bigger jobs done for others. If not, then you already have a price and the option for someone else that can do it sooner.

The cost of these things does vary from area to area. I have recently had a set of 12 plates laser cut locally . I was surprised to find only one supplier(my problem maybe!) in town and the other two were some distance away It wasn't as easy as I thought or as cheap!  I had to provide a CAD file as well which was an effort for me. Each plate in 6mm steel cost £8, yet I have it on good authority that in Sheffield it would have been about half that! Mind you it saved me an enormous amount of work that I no longer wish to do!

Since having them made I needed some alloy welding done as I have changed my side bars. I went to my usual chap and while chatting I asked whether he did it. He replied no , we do water jet cutting, its a lot cheaper. I said I was told it was not so neat or as accurate. He replied not true with the latest kit. He showed me a job he had just completed. I thought it was very neat and his accuracy was to 0.2mm. Next time i'm by I'm going to ask what he would have charged to make my plates!
