VIP Member Hecklejk Posted February 14 VIP Member Share Posted February 14 Out taking in some of Mid-Wales finest offroad trails today with my girlfriend and her kids (and mom) and about halfway up the golflinks trail (near Elan Valley) I heard an almighty BANG. Got out of the Jeep to find this! Yep, that is a snapped upper control arm!! Upon further inspection of the break, it looks like it had been damaged for some time and finally went today! My question is, does anyone know where I can pickup some JBA upper control arms in the UK??
VIP Member digger Posted February 14 VIP Member Share Posted February 14 Sorry I don't but if stuck you could probably get it welded up and reinforced as a temporary measure. Just a thought! I'm not an expert but that looks like it could have been a fault in the metal/manufacture to me. How old is it? Come on you engineers , what do you think? They are JBA control arms... Surely they have some guarantee!
V
Looking at the photo of the broken part it looks like it fractured some time ago with the crack starting on the left side and working towards the right the corrosion in the crack is the giveaway. The shape of the break looks like the inboard side of the arm is flexing up and down. Lifting the opposite side wheel will transfer all of the front end weight to the wheel that is still on the ground. If the suspension on the ground contact side is in full compression and on the bump stops, that wishbone will have to be strong enough to resist bending under the weight transfer. The photo is also a good example of why powder coating is a totally useless finish for automotive applications. Notice on the right side of the broken part that the powder coating has lost it's adhesion to the component and has started rusting under the finish. It is possible, that the powder coated finish may have contributed to the fracture. If the finish perforated on the left side and water got trapped underneath the finish it could lead to hidden surface corrosion and an increased likelihood of a crack forming causing a cycle of creeping crack formation and corrosion.
