Great trip today in the plains, nicely muddy, lots of thick ice and crunchy water crossings, great to see old friends and new friends. Thanks to @Chrisbyand@MGomesfor leading. A little bit of damage by ice.

Yes, interesting in our group too.  Trevor's XJ survived a bit too much water at one point.  Then both Cameron's and my TJ suffered from over heating issues.  We think it was down to the thick chalk slurry completely clogging the radiators.  I survived after several cooling stops and a long journey home avoiding the M3 and as many major roads as I could, punctuated my more roadside cooling breaks.  Cameron was not so lucky, his radiator literally blew its top, with the top section being blown apart and all coolant dumped onto the road.  He is still to get home after a frustrating wait for recovery, but I'll let him tell you more about that.

Sadly I never think to take my camera out, but hopefully others frkm our group will have some pictures to share.

A massive thanks to Chris and Manny for leading, and everyone in the JOC team who helped organise the event.

The plain has surely taken a few victims today! Glad you are home safe

I am such a rude, fool.  What I should have said in my post above is a huge thankyou to the other's in my group who so patiently waited for me while I cooled down, helped me check for issues and gave me their water to replace lost coolant.  I would noy have got home without all of you.  So, many many thanks and apologies that this was not in my first post.  Not sure I know everyone's forum name, but to those wjo I do, thankyou to @Chrisby, @Jeepinwithgeorgie, @Bela and @Jeepster1941

Great day… some damage to a fair few of us… but we still finished with a smile! Great to see some “regular faces” and even better to meet new ones! In my short life as a Jeeper I have surely learned how amazing and accommodating all Jeepers are!

The famous Salisbury plain mud was in full affect in radiators and cooling issues today. The mud caused sensor issues for me, but thanks to Gerry’s engine reader, we cleared them and all good.

@MGomes through the ice

At about 7 seconds in it looks like you can see the front bumper flexing as it breaks the ice.  Is that how the damage was eventually caused?

Great kick off to the year. Thanks to Lou, Chris, Manny and the JOC team for arranging and leading this trip. Here is a video of how we all started.

PS. There was no visible damage to my Jeep, despite the huge chunks of ice

Not that one - small puddle... there was a small lake after (that was the bumper killer...) go figure the bumper is attached by 8 very thin small plastic clips... I guess sturdier hardware is required in the front...

Is it just the hardware that has broken on yours?  If so that sounds like an easier (and cheaper) fix than I feared when I heard "Manny has ripped his bumper off"!

The JL stock bumper (front plastic bit) is attached to the car by a few (really small) plastic bits that clip on to the "metal bit" of the car - when I went if "first" to break the ice on a little lake (pic attached) the pressure form the ice literally broke all the plastic bits on the bumper that would clip to the car frame - its not a huge thing - I just need a new bumper LOL - the hardware is actually really WEAK when you think what the Rubicon is made for... I have already spoken to Alex @Buzz (as helpful as everyone says he is) - and identified the hardware that will replace the bumper (need the bosses approval and then find time to drive there) - so not a big thing - just an expense I was not counting on right now (comes with the hobby)

Currently I have it attached (thank you @Caroline12) so it does not fly away

Sorry to hear that it does mean a new bumper, with the expense that entails.  But I guess it is just a case of an upgrade you are making a bit sooner than planned, well maybe that is the 'sales case' to managament 😉

My Bumper was fine. In fact my Jeep returned with no injuries. However seeing how flimsy the plastic bumper is attached makes me wanna upgrade sooner than later as well

Yes, I mean that plastic bumper is no match for 40 metres of 3” thick ice 😉😉  I think it stood up to it quite well really 🙂

Took my radiator out today.  The black part is where the hose hit it when trying to clean the enging bay.  The whole thing was orignally caked with the clay.

It may be a good idea to check your radiators to ensure you don't have an exploding radiator too.

So blocked solid from both sides and then baked hard by hot jacket water, that’s not good 😕

how’s the radiator fan ? Ok?

Fan appears to be okay but I will be taking it off and making sure it is not seized before I put the new radiator in.

A fan clutch can fail in both modes, seized solid (over cooling) or permanently slipping (under cooling).
