Does anyone know if there are any campsites near the starting location? I quite fancy making a weekend out of it with the kids and coming down on the Saturday to camp.

Any info would be appreciated

We have used this campsite a few times before when laning on the Plains. Braces Acre, 4x4 friendly, close to lots of the routes and German Village, decent showers, campfires allowed, reasonable rates and a decent pub nearby.

Please see this site near Marlborough in the photo attached.
while I agree camping and making a weekend of it, I will draw your attention to the fact the whole area north of Salisbury Plain is flooded the River Avon, the 5 rivers that come into Salisbury are flooded.
so the ground could be a bit damp under canvas.

Thanks for the heads up, but I have a 4 person roof tent so will be well protected from the soggy ground!!

It appears my 1100 miles round trip to Aberdeen over two days, was one trip to many for my intermittent Transmission fault on start up.

It appears to now have become a permanent feature, and my gearbox is stuck in limp mode. With little chance of fixing it in the next two weeks as I’ve been hunting for the required part for 5 months now.

Knowing spaces are limited for this event, to be fair to other members which may want to attend please feel free to release my place to someone else who can definitely attend.

Hopefully sourcing the part and getting back on the road won’t take another 5 months 🙈🤣

I'll be doing some filming of the ride for my YouTube channel (it's how I keep family back home updated) and wondering if I'm okay to bring my drone along? Weather permitting I'd love to get some footage of the ride!!

No idea on what restrictions (if any) on flying drones on Plain, but it is MOD land I believe.  What is your Youtube channel?

As long as it's not on a live Military base or firing range I think I can fly (drone won't take off if I'm 8n a no fly zone!)

Here is a link to my channel, only a couple of videos up currently as I recently had a cull of old material!! https://www.youtube.com/@mudandmire

Absolutely no drones allowed. The routes change daily so treat all areas as live unless advised otherwise. There will also be MOD patrols so to avoid issues, don't take a chance.

Raakhee is completely right, no drones allowed, you will be probably fined and drone destroyed.

if you misbehave on the plains, they take your vehicle and run it over with a tank a couple of times, seen videos of this, then charge you £5000 for the privilege. It’s just not worth it, or upsetting the MOD and rangers.

1st - I looked at your YouTube Channel - videos are great!

Do not bring your drone - drone flying on MOD land is not allowed - it is their land and they allow us to play on it... (I use a GoPro myself) - there are a fair few restrictions:

1. No Drone flying (MOD land or English Heritage - so you cannot fly it over Stonehenge either) - Its a military training area and they are around almost the entire year (red flags only mean firing ranges in use) - they do not need to be filmed whilst training

2. You must comply to Red Flags (common sense really)

3. You MUST stick to the byways (BOATS or allowed Restricted Byways) - you cannot drive to a puddle, hole on the ground by the byway - Watch out for TRO's (fair few currently around Stonehenge / German Village)

4. You cannot drive trough plantations (unless if a byway passes trough it) - You might not see them but sometimes the Army will be training on these even at weekends (with what is happening in Ukraine you will see a lot of troops still training when you are driving around

5. Do not assume because you see tire marks you can go there

6. Yes - the MOD goes everywhere for training - but again, it is their land...

7. I  am assuming as I read the blurb that we are stopping at the tank by the racecourse - do not climb on it (as much as we thing it looks cool on pics, what will end up happening is that the area will be closed to public)

8. Common sense polite rules apply - if you see a dog walker / walker / horse rider, slow down, wave and smile (even if they look grumpy)

There is A LOT of abuse unfortunately, you only need a few to take the mic and the MOD closes areas / adds tarmac to them to prevent further abuse, in the past few years there are a few groups of responsible 4x4 drivers that have made an collaborative effort with the MOD / Landmark Wardens to change how people view 4x4 drivers, but you only need a few idiots to ruin that work (there was a huge even are around Christmas 2021 that ruined a lot of the good work) - also - do not forget we drive the coolest cars around, Jeeps are not so common and very noticeable - ppl see Land Rovers everyday, and they associate Disco I and Disco II's with most of the abuse (this is unfortunate), but all you need is someone on a Wrangler to do something stupid and then we all have the "label"

We go out fairly often on the plain (not particularly challenging, but its local and a fun day out) - the Wardens actually recognize our cars (not many Jeeps around) now and know we "mean well" and are usually well prepared / planned proper routes (last time we stopped to say hello to one of them and he even suggested a route I had never done) - if we stick to the routes there are plenty of ways to "get dirty" or stuck (if that's what you really want lol)
