Surfer
Does anyone carry their cycle on the rear of their Jeep and if so, what carrier do they use? We do have roof racks, but unable to lift a bicycle up there due to age and mobility issues and at £1300 cannot afford the roof rack that lowers to waist height. On my old ZJ a fair few years back I used to use a four bike carrier that just clamped onto the tow ball. Halfords own brand IIRC, cheap and cheerful and worked just fine for the family’s bikes on many trips on holiday to Wales. Surfer
Apparently you cannot fit a cycle carrier on the rear door of the 2018 Grand Cherokee even if you have a towbar?
VIP Member Mike WK2 Posted January 9 VIP Member Share Posted January 9 I use a Thule cycle carrier on my tow ball. Easy to fit, and if you get the right one they have a tilt mechanism so you can still open the tailgate.

I think the spoiler prevents its attachment, or the opening of the tailgate. We have a Thule 3-bike carrier which attaches to the towball, and has a lighting bar built in. It also can be tilted backward, without removing the bikes, to open the tailgate, though access is still rather limited, and it's easier to remove our two bikes than tilt it. It cost about £200, I think, but we've had it for more than ten years and it remains in perfect nick. It's strong enough to stand on, if the clamp is fastened tightly to the towball. We bought it from Halfords, and I would recommend it. We have a Fiamme rack on our caravan, so can still take the bikes. That's an altogether lighter but flimsier affair, but it's permanently mounted, so quick to set up and use. Surfer
Thanks. Our caravan has a maximum nose weight of 150kg so that may exclude the towbar mount. We would only be using it when the grandson comes away with us, he can put the cycle on the mount. However being fit and young maybe he can lift the cycle onto the roof as we already have the roof racks. We are just scared of damaging the roof when he is doing this as it is one of those mountain bikes. LOL!
