I assume you have an OBD2 scan tool and have used it for the diagnostic check.

Most scan tools report problems as stored DTC, Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Check to see what your tool does with the DTCs it finds.

 

It is not unusual for a generic scan tool to be unable to probe certain proprietary systems. Usually, these are transmission controllers but could be anything not engine related. It is possible that your vehicle could illuminate the MIL/EML without a scan tool being able to locate a DTC if the code is stored in the transmission and not in the Engine Management System.

 

What vehicle do you have that has this problem?
