Heat shield and oil change

Olivia

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just got back from doing the NC500 in my 2017 jeep wrangler (amazing trip) and noticed one of the washers/bolts on my heat sheild above the exhaust pipe has come loose so makes a rattling sound. Does anyone know what size bolt/washer I can use to replace it? because the other side is rusted so I can't tell and I have visions of garages taking the mickey and charging me eye watering prices.

Also does anyone know what oil to use as I'm thinking of changing this myself. Its a 2.8L diesel engine and I'm seeing synthetic 5W-30 and 5W-20. I've changed oil on my previous car but not the jeep before.

Thank you all

Hi Olivia, I had a very similar thing happen on my JKU. The bolt was still in but the metal around the hole the bolt goes through had rusted so that the heat shield wasn’t being held in place and rattled. Check if the  bolt is still there or not. If it is I fixed mine with a large penny washer on the bolt just to make good where the heat shield had rusted. A cheap fix and has lasted a good 3 or 4 years so far.

Same thing happened on my 2009 reg JK Offside washer on heat shield. Annoying rattle.

As said penny washer .

Recommended oil 5w-30 fitted with particulate filter

Early models like mine without particulate filter 0W-40 can be used.

First 5 years garage used Mobile 1 5W-30 ESP

Done my own changes after that and been using Mobile1 0W-40 ESP which  seems to run smoother. (especially in winter months obviously)

I do an oil & filter change every  6 months (3-4 thousand)

Easy access for oil pan & filter compared to many vehicles. (6.6 litres) + Mopar filter + copper washer (don't forget to ask for discount at parts department)

Drain plug torque  54nm (40ft-lbs)  Oil filter cap 25nm (18.4ft-lbs)

(also don't forget to take off old O ring on cap don't want to double gasket it) 🙂

Worth changing diff oil. If it hasn't been done in a while you'll notice a big difference.  Fill hole plug torque 34nm (25ft-lbs)

I now use a 'little' Permatex high temp thread sealant on the plug as I was getting just a fraction of damp around the plug after 12 years of being bone dry.

(Red Line is an excellent brand to use for diff oil)

Also worth taking out MAP sensor and spay with sensor cleaner if possible or replace with new if its totally crudded up as mine was after 104,000 + Check engine light (Also makes a huge difference)

Spay cleaning MAF is also advisable. Have a look on YouTube Both are relatively easy access on top of engine.

Thank you. Silly question but how do I get the mopar filter? When I Google I seem to get every ebay link and American website known to man. I'm very close to having to call a dealership and asking them but I'd love to be able to do this myself. Do you have a link I could use please?

The easiest way to get Mopar parts in the UK is going to a franchised Jeep dealer parts counter.

Ebay is another option.

Rockauto.com but they usually only cater for models that were originally sold in the USA, so you are out of luck with the diesel.

WIX and Bosch are a good alternative to Mopar.

Why use Mopar, and certainly not from a dealer. Pay through the nose.

Mahle, WIX etc are very good alternatives. These are often original equipment in many up market vehicles and are easily obtainable in local auto spares outlets. Just google 'oil filters' for your Jeep Model and you'll find one.

As its not far away, I usually just go to local dealer parts dept. for original service parts, after checking on line for alternatives, pricing etc.

They usually give me reasonable discount (within their own constraints) and so far over the years have built up a good relationship / contact.

However, got a good deal on Mopar service parts on Ebay recently from Horsham dealership which was unfortunately closing down, (Mopar Fuel filter, oil filter, air filter £50) which will keep me going for the next couple of years 🙂

Rear brake pad backing plates have always deteriorated (Mopar inc.) (Fronts are fine)  and I'm giving Akebono pads a try as they have a nice strong steel backing plate, which I got from Rock Auto.

As for engine parts, timing belt etc will always go for original VM from main UK supplier, as dealer pricing is really high & they've got no scope to compete.

Thank you so much everyone. Honestly I'd attend a jeep maintenance seminar if JOC held one just for advice like this. I will keep you all updated with how my first jeep oil change goes. 😊

I am inclined to agree based on price. I used to buy Mopar oil filters and other service parts from my local UK dealer (for 10 years) up until Fiat bought Chrysler. Back then my £5 oil filters increased to £18 straight after the takeover. Fiat's greed burned me as a regular customer and I have only bought a handful of dealer supplied parts since when there was no other source.

I mostly buy WIX filters now. I still buy Mopar filters from Rockauto when I have an order for heavy parts. An oil filter or two doesn't add much more to the shipping. I like the quality of the Mopar canister oil filters.

i used to used non Mopar fuel filters on my diesel JK, but started getting "low fuel manifold pressure" fault codes in certain conditions( full throttle mostly), since moving back to Mopar i haven't had a problem, but note that i do have a "Tunit" booted module installed, which can change the fueling.

Managed to change the oil and filter (mopar) but will look into the alternatives when I'm not being shouted at by the car for an oil change everytime I turn it on.

Last question how do I reset the "oil change required" message from the dashboard or does it go away eventually. YouTube said press accelator three times but its not working
