It's Mrs Volant165 here.

Exciting news … save the date!

With the help of John Morgan we have secured a site for this years JOC Summer Camp, our 10th anniversary as a club. The event starts mid week on 17th August with two days exclusive hire of over 4000 acres available at Walters Arena & on Friday we are aiming to take in some local Green Lanes. Watch this space! Further information will follow shortly.

Great news and for those that know Seven Sisters, this is now known as the Walters Arena.
The site hosts a few stages of the RAC rally, (sadly not when we are there) and BMW motorcycles host their trails training there.

Plus a green lane runs through it that is part of the sarn helen ancient roman road that is only open a few months a year. Plus they have hosted "King of the valleys " Uk version of King of the Hammers at the arena.

it is a fantastic site, i have been going there for 15 years, and still find new trails to drive, there is some very testing sections, it is a great site for going off to make your own trails.

i would advise anyone that is going to have a CB radio, as it is very easy to get lost.

I am happy to work on some green laning routes within range of Walter's Arena if need be, but I won't have time to recce them beforehand. I am a GLASS member so I will select lanes based on recent TW2 reports.

Let me know the maximum range (10 miles, 20 miles, 30 miles radius).

Do you want all of the laning routes to be suitable for all, or can there be routes for modified Jeeps?

I am also happy to lead a laning group on the Friday. If someone else has already worked out routes, please share the GPX with me at least a week before.

That would be amazing! A mixture of routes would be great. I'm not so concerned re radius but more about how many hours it would it take to complete. Many thanks, Mrsvolant165

I think the premise is that you can explore the site as you wish. But it would be advisable to have someone with you in case you need help.

yes, the site is so big, we normally split up into a few groups, of similar vehicles, then go and do our own thing, as i said before, i have been going there regularly for 15 years, so i know the site reasonably well, i just want to avoid being put in a set group, then being told where i have to go.

Oh. Now I get what you mean. Think we are pretty easy going. You can join any group and leave at any time.

Yep, JOC is very relaxed. Its one of the things I like. You can join a group or do your own thing.

I've just booked!

Frosty's advice to have a CB is a good idea, especially if you are not a big groupie.

I know the surrounding area well, as it is one of the best caving areas in uk. Mobile signals are poor, especially down in the valleys. Some providers are better than others but its a bit of pot luck!

I think it is highly unlikely that will happen, and if it did, driver's will just split off and join up with their mates when they see them. If you have to break off from a group to return to base, it can take hours to find the group you were with. It's common place to tag along with the first group you find until you bump into your friends again. Sometimes, I have been leading a small group and we have picked up strays along the way and become a convoy.

A GPS that can do off road or straight line navigation or an old fashioned compass and map are also useful.

Does Walter's Arena have a map of their site they can provide to customers? Just knowing the official boundaries of the site would be something new to me.

If not, it would be useful if someone could identify the key landmarks and find out what their What3Words addresses are or make a GPX with the important waypoints:

  • Entrance/Exit
  • Signing In Desk
  • Parking Lot
  • Toilets
  • The lower pond picnic spot
  • The dry rockcrawl
  • The wet rockcrawl
  • Start of Sarn Helen byway
  • Loads more make up your own names for them...

I would do it, but I often get lost there without my GPS waypoints. I don't have the data with me at the moment so finding the landmarks on a map is proving to be a challenge for me.

I think I kept a Map of the site somewhere. Went there few times years ago with other clubs. I will look for it.
