Will be lookkng to place an order for my winch soon - held off hoping for any sort of new year sale, but can't see any.  In addition to the winch what other items do people recommend? Tree saver strap?  Blanket? ...?

Interesting subject winches ….

I had one on my tj for best part of 10 years … only used it twice & one of those was at work …

I’ve put off buying one for the jk as I’m not sure I really need one …

I don’t do pay n play sites as a rule , think I’ve been to them all over the years …

& 90% of green lanes ( that I prefer doing ) don’t really need one …. Any time I or any body in the group I’m with has got stuck a tug with another 4x4 has got them out …

I found them high maintenance … every time you go through a ford or river they really bear the brunt of the water places like strata Florida really give them a good soaking 😳

as you say though a couple of tree strops a good quality snatch block , something to wrap around the cable when it’s pulling incase it snaps …. As well as all the other strops u normally carry & a good pair of waterproof gloves I recon

Yeah, I do wonder how often I will use it, but I’m kind of committed now.  Any suggestions on good places to shop for winch related stuff?

Probably not the winch supplier! Expensive, as are specialist 4x4 outlets. Try Machine Mart for strops, shackles and the like - check they are rated with markings and/or certificate. Other similar sources, every thing you want or need is available 'on line' but check it is rated.

Personal view, again!

I run a Warn winch on my JK and also did on my TJ’s. All got heavy use over years and served me well and fault free. I’m always the one on recovery duty … 🙄

ARB do a great recovery set which come with everything you’ll need all correctly rated and great quality. Only thing I’d recommend now as a must is soft shackles over traditional steel for general use. Safer and easier in most situations. I keep 4 of each just in case in the Jeep.
Just as another point , your winch is only as good and it is installed ! Both electrically and physically so do you research if self fitting. Use quality hardware ( ideally not standard 8.8 rated nuts and bolt , go for 10.9 or 12.9 if possible) and make sure your electrics are correctly rated, fused and with a cut off 👍
