Hello All,

I've recently bought my first Jeep – a 2006 Grand Cherokee CRD. It needs a few jobs doing, and I plan to maintain it myself as much as possible. Glad to have found this Forum – looks like there's a lot of information here!

Changing engine oil and filter, diesel filter, and glow plugs at home.

I'd like to ask about diagnostics systems and programming a spare key, but there doesn't seem to be a "Start New Topic" button in the relevant section of the forum. Is this because I'm a newbie?

Very nice looking WH/WK 👍 What other jobs are you looking at doing to it?

Hi Spookie, thanks for the welcome!

I'm planning to keep it standard for now (for insurance reasons), aside from maybe a skid-plate to protect the front diff on deeply rutted farm tracks. There are a number of little maintenance jobs to do, though. I need to sort out a ball joint on the front left, and change the rear shocks. At some point I suppose I'd better change the oils for the transmission, transfer box and diffs, as it's done a little over 100k and doesn't have much in the way of service history. The biggest hurdle right now is sorting out a spare key, as the dealer quoted a staggering £370, and local auto locksmiths don't seem interested in doing Jeep/Chrysler keys.

At 100k your doing all the right things, prevenative maintenance is always the best idea. Having your Jeep stock for the moment isn't an issue as you will be supprised at exactly what they will do off road without any mods. Trust me I have a V8 WG and used that at Slindon when it was stock and amazed myself with it. Now it has a 2 inch lift, bigger tyres and wheel spacers and will be trying it out at Slindon this year - watch this space 🤣 I also have a 2.7 CRD WG that is staying stock ............ at the moment.

Some of the other "big brains" on here maybe able to help you with your Key problem, £370 is enough to make anyone gasp just for one key but that's the problem when you go anywhere near a "stealership"

Where abouts are you from?

If you can get hold of a genuine blank transponder key for your UK model, you can get the car reprogrammed to recognise both keys. The dealership has a gadget that may still be called a Mopar StarScan, in the old days it was a DRB3 scan. You need all of your transponder keys for the vehicle present at the same time when the Jeep's ECU is reprogrammed to recognise them. Leave one at home and it will remain useless.

Alternatively, some keys can be cloned if you take it to a locksmith with the tool to do it. When it works, it is a lot cheaper than getting a dealership to do it but you also run the risk that whoever cloned your key can make more clones that you don't know about. But this is the same risk taken whenever keys are surrendered to anyone else (E.g. airport parking etc).

A local Land Rover specialist lent me their professional level 'universal' diagnostic tool for a problem I had on one of my Jeeps. I was surprised how many features it had access to that I thought were locked to the Mopar tool. It could get into my automatic transmission which is something that ODB2 scanners that cost less than £1K usually cannot do. I never looked, but perhaps it could also do key reauthorisation. Worth asking if your local workshop has a gizmo with a menu option to reauth Jeep keys. You only need a UK transponder key blank if they do.

Welcome to the club 👍

I agree entirely with regard to the key, find a local Auto key specialist that can do the job. I recently paid for my stepdaughters Citroen to have 2 new keys cut and programmed to her car for £250. Citroen would have wanted me to pay nearer a £1000 to replace them and they were special order because of the age of the car.....

Not sure where you are based but if it is anywhere near Birmingham tru a company called Duplicut.

Hi All, thanks for the welcomes!

I'm located near Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Both independent locksmiths that I've contacted went very quiet when I told them what vehicle it's for.

I've been thinking of getting my own diagnostic unit anyway, so now I'm hunting about for one that has the capability to program keys on the WK. I have had a bit of a play with the Britpart Lynx Evo for Land Rovers in the past. That could program keys, but on Land Rovers only!

you could ask Phil at "Hargreaves MOT", they are an independent Jeep specialist, with over 30 years experience, and have been doing a great job on many of my Jeeps, you can call Phil on 01274 569262 they have got my GC in for MOT and a few other jobs at the moment, they are in North Bradford, so not a million miles from you.

Thanks Frosty, I might give him a call, although I think I've found a diagnostics system that'll program keys on the WK.

It's called AppCar DiagFCA, from a Polish company, and costs USD $50. It runs on a Windows laptop, using a cable to connect to the ODB port. Some folks on the American Jeep forums seem to use it, and say that it does more than many 'normal' diagnostics systems. It mostly just turns functions on or off, rather than actual programming, with the exception of programming keys.

Has anyone here tried it?

Hi All,

Just reporting back on the Key Fob issue.

Cheers!

I don't know why, but much of the text from the above post seems to have disappeared. Here's the rest of the story:

I have successfully programmed a spare key using the Appcar Diag program. I also used an OBDLink SX cable and interface. It took quite a bit of figuring out, but it was quick and easy to do once set up. I'd definitely recommend this route to any fellow Jeep owners who need replacement keys. Better yet, if you happen two presently have two working keys, get a third now as you can program an extra key without any diagnostics if you already have two functional keys.

Otherwise, if anyone needs one doing, I could potentially get it done for you.
