Platinum Member WJKUR Posted June 27, 2019 Platinum Member Share Posted June 27, 2019 Hi all, i’ve just changed to the US numberplate holder and numberplate but someone pointed out that it’s not actually legal as the letters are too small?? Can someone enlighten me? Anyone. Have any issues with the US plate? Cheers Bjorn

Can someone enlighten me? Anyone. Have any issues with the US plate? Cheers Bjorn This one keeps cropping up and there seem to be lots of opinions but I don’t know the definitive answer. However from whatI have been able to gather there are only two “approved” sizes of plate for the UK, the normal oblong and the square (LR defender type) and they should have the approved font size and spacing for the numbers and letters. Whether anything else is actually “illegal” or not I’m not sure but it seems to come down mainly to is it clearly readable. In other words if you’ve put something, or some arrangement to make it look like something it’s not ( your name for example). Apparently the plate must also show the name of the supplier on it somewhere (?) . I actually found it quite difficult to get a 6” x 12” number plate made up for mine ( something my local Jeep dealer is experiencing after they broke it ) and had it supplied from a plate manufacturer in Ireland who specialise in US plates . Technically, if you have the usual 2 letters, 2numbers, 3 letters format then this will need to go on 2 lines ( 4+3 ) and with a 6” tall plate this does make the characters a tad smaller than ‘approved standard’ size to get them to fit. Having said that as long as the font, colour and spacing is correct and the characters are clearly legible you shouldn’t have any problems. Mine has passed all MOTs and never attracted any unwanted attention. Hope this helps.
Administrators stewart Posted July 3, 2019 Administrators Share Posted July 3, 2019 I believe if there is no alternative mount then you are able to fit US size plates (technically imported Vehicles only) Down here you can pay for a private rego and then they offer a choice of a few sizes! Fortunately one is a US size option!
