I see. But, the grands between the XJ (or whatever the EU equivalent is) and the WK/WH don't always look the same. Were there facelifts V, or were there other significant changes?

An XJ is a Cherokee not a grand.

The ZJ is the grand Cherokee shape  that ran then

For the purpose of this post only, if the starting point is the XJ Cherokee this was produced from 1984 model to 2001 with a facelift in 1997. The ZJ Grand Cherokee was orignally designed as a replacement for the XJ but Jeep decided to keep the XJ selling alongside by giving the ZJ the 'Grand' prefix for the 1993 model year. Jeep had a deal with Steyr-Puch in Austria to make European models and these models had the ZG designation. The Grand Cherokee WJ replaced the ZJ with the 1999 model year, the WG replacing the ZG almost a year later. The KJ Liberty started with the 2001 model and in the USA was selling alongside the XJ for all of 2001. The KJ was rebadged Cherokee for other markets.

The natural successor of the XJ is the JKU.

Thread resurrection time! Had 2 ZG Grands neither of which I should have sold one V8 WG written off by a hit and run driver One WG was a wreck plus my current one which I love also had a 3l WK which I felt would have been a handful off road Still got the Cherokee
