Matt
Going to be doing annual winter pilgrimage to chamonix in the JK next weekend, the diesel had been running bit rough and its covered 70,000km, so a few things that were probably nearing end of life in the engine bay. Took her into SMS Diesel services in Gawcott, bucks to check the fuel injectors, replace the cam belt and the turbo pipes. Great, professional job by the team at sms, who will test injectors that are sent to them, as well as on vehicle. Tomgan intercooler pipes feel better engineered than the samco hoses, pick up feels better too (although likely that is also a bit of wishful thinking). Matt
Bit of an update after a lot of driving on the continent at the weekend. The turbo-pipes definitely give better throttle responsiveness - however this combined with the sprint-booster overloaded the ECU. No problems on shorter outings or when switched off. error codes identified and cleared with JScan app MPG performance improved More 'turbo-whistle' noise - which I quite like
Matt
The Jeep has been rattling a bit recently - more than the usual Diesel noise, but worse on start-up and when cold. I had thought it was related to the heatshield by the front offside exhaust and tightened the bolts and washers. Checked again today and noticed a crack in part of the exhaust mounting that seems to have rusted and cracked. Not sure whether this is repairable (weld?) or whether I'm looking at a whole new part - my guess is the latter - Would be grateful for opinions. Quite a lot of surface corrosion, so booking in for an underseal!
Matt
From the exhaust parts layout diagram, I've worked out that this is the catalytic converter . So, looking to get it welded.
Platinum Member V Posted April 13, 2021 Platinum Member Share Posted April 13, 2021 There may not be sufficient access on the Jeep to grind the break clean enough for a strong weld. If this is the case, weld the break and then weld a reinforcing bar over the top of the broken bar. Weld to the original bar wherever a clean enough surface can be ground. The reinforcement bar will act as a permanent splint.

Matt
£30 repair, its not pretty, but does the job. Also 'deleted' the muffler on jk today, looks better, more clearance and sounds marginally more throaty. We'll see on mpg.

Matt
Judging by previous threads, yes (Although I'm no expert on Vehicle testing). Cat still in place, so emissions will be the same.
Platinum Member Volant165 Posted April 23, 2021 Platinum Member Share Posted April 23, 2021 Cat back passes. I had Hayward and Scott custom bend a stainless cat back in 2013 and again in 2014 on two Rubicons and have passed all MOT's since.
Platinum Member frosty Posted April 23, 2021 Platinum Member Share Posted April 23, 2021 how much were the intercooler pipes, i am interested in putting the same on my JK.
Matt
@frosty - from memory they weren't cheap: They are £360 now: Turboschlauch Jeep Wrangler JK CRD 200 PS Set links/ rechts schwarz (tomgan.eu)
Matt
Got a set of Covercraft precision fit carharrt seat covers courtesy of Quadratec last week and fitted them at the weekend. As mines a lowly Sport, the seat fabric was a bit low rent and made the cabin very gloomy. This fabric is really hard wearing and looks 100% better than the original seats IMO. These really fit well, despite being manufactured for LHD jeeps; covercraft put extra holes in the RH drivers seat for the recliner.
Matt
I've wanted to upgrade the audio system in the JK for a while now and finally committed to doing it and taking on the build myself. I've never done anything like this, so most challenging build on the jeep to date. Started with stripping down to the bare metal and rubbing with acetone to degrease the surface. Then pretty laborious task of 'deadening' the tub with first aluminium / butyl sheets then some cheap adhesive 3mm rubber foam in some areas. A new connection for the amplifier, which is going under the passenger seat on a 'basket' that fixes to the seat frame away from moisture and well ventilated.
Matt
Progressed a bit over the weekend. It really is a time consuming job when you're learning and implementing and the same time. Nothing is really complex, but all takes a bit of working out and a couple of goes to get right. Spaghetti of focal rca head unit to amp power and remote from drivers firewall to under centre console sub woofer gain up under console, will screw control in subsequently All cables to amp meet here, there's a lot! under seat tray from amazon.com, sprayed black. Cut some 5mm ABS to sit on top to prevent potential ground loop feedback. Final resting place rear focal flax 6.5' coaxial. Used 2.5mm new cable to front, rear and sub.
Matt
System finished other than tweaking of gain and filters on the amp. All went back together rather well. The focal amp, speakers and sub don't disappoint, giving great clarity, particularly with low and mid-range. The bass isn't shaking my mirrors but that's not really what I want from hifi. It is tight and punchy. The sou d deadening seems to have really worked, the jeep isn't quiet but the cabin is definitely quieter. Headliner on its way to finish. Matt
A while since any activity on the jeep. wiper motor started groaning alt the weekend - I haven't done an intrusive investigation underneath the body work behind the bonnet yet. I suspect its the death throes of either the wiper motor or linkage, got a price of £180 for parts to replace (seems like a simple job to replace the mechanism) . Has anyone had similar issues?
