Rust proofing - Hmmm

I took the 4.0 Cherokee down to Warwickshire to 'Before n After', a seemingly well regarded small operation that guarantees no rust coming through treated areas in 10 years. a colleague at work had it done on his Discovery 5 years ago and he's very happy with his car after that length of time.

Dropped the car off first thing last Thursday and picked it up, eventually, at 6pm. It was dark and raining, the car was outside, so no chance to inspect the job, but all seemed nicely black and sticky underneath, so paid the £780 and drove home. Generally the coverage is good and, as I had all the interior out apart from the driver's seat, the chap was able to put Waxoyl into more spaces and cavities than would otherwise be the case.

When I got home i put the car in the garage and crawled underneath with a lamp to have a really good look. Oh dear! Lots of areas untouched/missed, despite assurances of 99% coverage, it was 80% at best, the missed bits mostly being places where dirt and damp can accumulate and create rust.

So, I email my dismay and took the car back down today to get it finished off. The chap squatted down next to the car, poked about with a screwdriver and declared "It looks alright to me". I showed him some photos I had taken, which clearly showed not only the missed areas, but that I had the car on a lift and that I had a decent light! His jaw dropped.  So I left him the car and went off for a coffee.  When I went back I saw, for the first time, the inside of his 'workshop'. OMG!

Anyway, he had now covered everywhere and I told him that the job was now to my satisfaction.  The car was up on four individual mobile posts, linked together by cable to operate together. He commenced the lowering and I watched  in horror as only three posts lowered! The stuck one was on the opposite side from where he was operating the posts. The car was inches from being dropped 5 feet onto its side before he noticed me waving.  So I had to wait another 20 minutes before he got it working.

I couldn't wait to drive home.  So, you may see this operation advertised or hear about it. The 'Before n After' website testimonials are all glowing of course, but how many owners put their car on a lift and look under it with a big lamp?  I would have to advise that there are many better places to take your Jeep for rust proofing! Overall, the operation was chaotic and his premises a shambles.

Glad all worked out.

I would have driven back the moment I would be faced with this set... A company, no matter how small or big, as their working place looking like this... what a great business card!

Thanks of the heads-up!!!!

In fairness he did put it right but no idea how he gets away with a workshop like that. Our workshop can get messy at times when you are under pressure and some jobs don't go as planned so it's one job after another and little time to get things tidy. Never like the one in the picture though and we are constantly being assessed if it's not for waste disposal or annual equipment inspection, fire certifications and insurance assessors checking we are complying with our policy.

Only in a Jeep

'Before & After'...it's a shame you didn't flag up your intention to pay them a visit before going, a bit of digging on various forums will have tales of woe with this particular outfit; I had my JK done a week after buying it with Morris Black Wax at Warmington Hill Garage between Banbury & Warwick, fantastic job & it cost...wait for it, £150 inc VAT etc. I also have 59 plate Defender which has the usual shite Solihull chassis & will be giving it to them in Spring, they've done all my 4x4's & even squirt oil into the box sections etc.

The phrase 'a fool and his money are easily parted' was written for me.  In fairness he did get it done in the end and it comes with a 10 year warranty.  But, yeah... damn.

I think we've all been party to 'a fool & his money...' at some point, and those that say they haven't are telling porkies...the sad thing about 'Before & After' is that their ads are really good and in fairness the various agents seem to have stood the test of time but you aren't the first to flag them up on a forum and you won't be the last...perhaps even sadder is that in this day & age we still have to have our Jeeps, Land Rovers etc treated to keep them on the road...my Defender chassis despite having been looked after is terrible...its only a 59 plate and Im already contemplating a galvanised chassis and my brand new JK didn't look too sparkling either!

Has anyone heard of these people?

http://www.carrustprotection.co.uk

They specialise in Dinitrol treatment and have various operations throughout the UK - including one in Orpington in Kent, which would be good for me. They say they will need my vehicle for 6 hours and have given me a quote. Seem very professional.

Paul at PB Customs is the obvious and recommended choice from many JOC members - however, he is in Oundle (near Peterborough I believe) - so I am looking for something closer to home ... but only if they are any good :glasses:

Ps: I still think your Cherokee XJ is still one of the nicest looking Jeeps ever produced, a bit like the original Range Rover...subtle, but very capable.

Well thank you kind sir!

Have been quoted £490.00 inc Vat by these guys. As you say seem a professional setup and they have a facility just down the road from me in Bletchley which means I can drop it in on the way to work and pick it up later in the day, which is a big plus for the convenience even if it is a bit more expensive. Will probably go ahead with this...... unless anyone has any horror stories or pictures of the their workshop looking like a waste disposal site  :icon_evil:

Same price for me Tim ... I am very tempted.

They also offer a "collect and return" service for £50 - which to Orpington and back doesn't seem unreasonable. I can't get mine done until new year ... just too busy ... so you may be the guinea pig :glasses:
