My 4.0 XJ needs a new LPgas system fitted at a cost of £1500-2000.

Do I

a) do it

b) look at a 2.8CRD KJ

c) look at a 3.7 v6 converted KJ  - anyway is the 3.7 really as bad as its reputation suggests ?

All the above will cost me about the same .

May depend what you are using vehicle for?

Social, domestic and pleasure, towing caravan, green laning, serious off roading, expeditions, business, etc etc.?

KJ's are now 'old' and you will expect to have to replace/renew items other than service items.

If you've had the XJ for a while and know it inside out and it has good bodywork and chassis then keep it!

If you're handy with spanners and a big hammer then it doesn't really matter.

If you rely on somebody else, like a garage, then be prepared to spend money!

Very good with a large hammer. Pretty OK mechanic when time permits and the XJ on the whole is as sound as a bell with minimal corrosion.

Not really used for towing but is very handy in winter and on the fields occasionally but its mostly used as daily transport in hilly West Wales (the 1100 ft contour line runs right through our garden). Roads are untreated in general or very patchily done.

I've had it about 2 years and 24,000 miles.

I do about a 1000 miles a month or thereabouts. LPG is about half the cost of petrol locally and 18-20mpg is a bit steep. That's why the LPG fix is being considered.

Can you fit the LPG system yourself then get it 'signed off' by an approved person?

141k.

Original multipoint  LPG system fitted approx 10 years ago declared knackered by local LPG specialist. May need a second opinion on that.
